Chelonian
Hi, I'm currently using an old, light, cast iron ASO, and I really need to find a large chunk of steel to use as an anvil. I've seen people using bulldozer parts, forklift tines, and large (often cylindrical) chunks of steel from machine shops. I emailed a forklift repair shop about a week ago asking if they had a broken or damaged tine they would be willing to sell, but they just never responded. There is a machine shop fairly close to where I live, maybe they would have something? Should I email them, or would I be better off just going there and asking? Also, if they do have one, what would be a reasonable price/LB for me to pay? Any ideas/opinions are appreciated, thanks!
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
It's always better to make contact in person. Around here twenty cents a pound is about the going rate
51 Papy
Don't email! emails like that get deleted fast and are easily ignored. You'll have better luck walking through the door, opening your mouth and telling people what your looking for and why. Be curteous and mindful that you are taking their time. Time is money! But, walk in and make a friend. If you find someone that doesn't want to talk move on to the next place or say hello to the guy in the yard or shop. Don't take it personally. Keep going until you find a friend and what you want...then...make sure you make them something and deliver in person. I can't tell you what price is reasonable in your area. After several, and I mean several, trips through the door I found a guy that was really interested and had a hammer bit from a back hoe. He loaded it for me and sent me on my way. $0.00 US. I stopped by with pictures of the post anvil and a couple of gifts from the forge. Couple of trips later he had scrap from his shop waiting for me in his office. Walk in looking to make a friend and you might find one. Papy
Frosty
Ditto Papy! Face to face is by far the best way to do these things. Folk WANT to help nice people but HATE SPAMMERS. Asking this kind of question via email is SPAM or scam, I never respond and filter further emails from the same person. It's like slamming the door in your own face. I don't really have anything to add to Papy's advice it's golden. Never get more impersonal than a phone call, sometimes talking to the receptionist will get you farther than talking to the boss. S/he knows more about how the business works and what's where than the boss does, a good word from the receptionist is like gold in your pocket, make her mad and you're done for. Frosty The Lucky. Chelonian
Great, thanks for all the advice! I guess I'll just go there sometime and see what happens.
ThomasPowers
Make sure you let them know why you want it---maybe take in a print out of what you want to build. Remember answering an email COSTS a business money for something that might never happen. Going in person shows some commitment to actually get an item.
