jpbreezy
Just started making my forge, and am having trouble getting my fire hot enough to heat the iron. I use a charcoal forge, any tips on how to get my fire hot enough to reach the temperature to forge steel?
marcusb
I have found two things to help greatly with charcoal, Pile it deep and use less air than you think you need.
Daswulf
Jpbreezy, you aren't really giving us much info to be able to help. Only that you are making "A" forge and you are using charcoal. Is that charcoal briquettes or real lump charcoal? Side blast or bottom blast forge? Whats your air supply? Without knowing more it's hard to help other than to make some wild guesses. Good pictures help a lot too.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
Welcome to IFI... Have you read this thread yet? https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/53873-read-this-first/ It will help you get the best out of the forum. Pictures of your forge and air set up will help answering your question.
Charles R. Stevens
Marcusd, your half right. Bottom blast forges need to be deep for charcoal not so much for sideblast. So depending if he is looking at the sideblast and JABAD stickies or if he is building something else will determine deapth
