Kerby
Ok, total newbie here, and sure this is a dumb question, but here goes. we recently purchased an anvil, with the hardened steel face totally missing, bummer but for 140 bucks the tuition wasnt too bad. It is working ok in its present condition, but the question is how long would a new hardened steel top stay attached if attached with JB Weld? the iron dwarf
not long, it needs to be welded over the entire area, tack a rod about 3/8" diameter down the center of the face, place your new top plate on top and then weld first one side then the other making sure there are no slag pockets and keep going until you reach the sides
Fatfudd
Good question, why don't you try it and let us know.
ThomasPowers
Might check if there was a VoTech school that would take on adding a faceplate as a welding project, Heat treating will then be an issue though Charles McRaven describes how he did one in "Country Blacksmithing" not too far from where you are at in fact.
