Fazer
Hello. I have been offered a 167 lb Star anvil. Awaiting pictures, bit supposedly OK, one bit of edge missing, but good face, and told decent rebound. I don't know much about these. Is it worth pursuing. Looking at around $2.5/lb. Thanks
ThomasPowers
We don't know enough about the anvil and you and what you hope to do with it to make that judgement. Will that price mean you will be eating beans for the next 6 months; or you won't miss it at all? How badly do you need an anvil *now*? As I recall the Star brand has a steel face and a cast iron body: as such the thickness of the face is important as they are a more difficult to repair anvil if there is a problem. It should be a quiet anvil; but of course we don't know if you have close neighbors and so need a very quiet set up. I would not suggest doing heavy sledge work on it especially with a less experience striker; but of course we don't know if you will mainly be working 1/2" and smaller steel on it or 2" and larger.... Not a bad price for your area DEPENDING ON CONDITION. Out here I've seen pretty much destroyed anvils advertised as being in good shape so a picture would be better than a subjective description.
