Oh, I’m just belting them out!

It's probably why I took a shine to you.

Nice job on the hammer. Kind of makes me wonder how the little wheel grinder feels about the new one.

You do know belt grinders aren't good for sharpening metal cutters like drill and lathe bits, yes?

Despite my lack of polish?

Also tried out polishing a bevel on the still-in-progress Bowie knife.

I think at some point I might get the narrow contact wheel setup (as seen in the picture above) for doing narrow fullers.

Now that I have the grinder, I’m no longer sure this is an option. The online materials from G&P seem to show some kind of interchangeable fixture that is missing from my grinder. I think I may have an older model.

Two items of note:

First, I found someone on eBay selling a box of five 2 x 90 Norton R999B belts in 24 grit for $22.50 including shipping. I know that's a really coarse grit, but I figure it will get me started and give me capacity for rough grinding things other than knives. Hard to beat the price, too.

Second, there was someone at Quad-State this weekend selling a practically identical grinder (fitted out with a 3-phase motor and VFD, along with some 1 x 90 AO belts) for $750, marked down from $900. Feeling even better about what I paid!

great grinder!!!  Now you will never understand how you have done without it..

Also since you have mastered the can do anything with a welder thing, you are going to be able to make a whole bunch of different attachments..

Very nice..

Finally figured out the tracking mechanism: the top and bottom screws adjust the angle of the bracket that holds the top wheel; the middle screw locks everything in place. I look forward to more consistent plunge grinds.

Just did a search for belts and found zirconia 80 grit 2x90 belts for $6.73 a piece. That's not a bad price.

Found another place that has 2x90 zirconia belts for $3.65 to $5.75 (twice that if you order fewer than 12). Ordered a dozen in 120 grit; with shipping, it comes to about $4.81 per belt.

It looks there aren't a lot of places that carry 2x90 belts -- certainly none of the places on the current version of the Suppliers List. Since this place looks like they make everything to order, odd sizes aren't a problem. If this order works out, I suspect I'll be back.

Long-overdue update: this has turned out to be a tremendously valuable addition to my shop. I've also discovered that I can buy oversized belts from the local industrial surplus place, cut them to 90" long*, split them to 2" wide, and splice the ends together (my experiments with splicing material and adhesives are documented HERE), which saves a LOT of money special-ordering belts.

On an amusing note, I couldn't remember where this thread was, so I did a Google search with "iforgeiron.com", "jhcc", "pedestal", and "grinder" as my search terms. Here's what their AI assistant had to say about that:

Nice try, folks.

* The extra pieces that are too short for belts get cut up into 4-1/2" circles to use with a backing disc on my angle grinder.

Don't you just LOVE AI? Things like this make it easy to sympathize with new guys and their wildly inaccurate ideas of "how it's done."

I know a lot of people in creative professions (writers, musicians, etc), and one of the best comments I've yet seen about AI comes from my friend Mike, a talented performer and teacher of jazz saxophonist: "I'm completely convinced that very soon, most of the music available to the general public will be AI-generated. I am equally convinced that none of it will be worth listening to."

I agree, have you listened to the modern version of telephone hold music lately? It's all AI generated and makes me long for Musak.

Heck, the term AI is marketing. It isn't Artificial Intelligence, it's just very sophisticated and complex programming. The only way "AI" can pass a Turing test is if it's been specifically programmed for the person testing it.

Heck, "AI" has my new laptop OS so packed with bloatware it's almost impossible to get it to do what I want. Has suggestions for everything but can't do basics like print the highlighted text, pic, etc.

GRRRR. Oh good, now I'm thinking about performing a little AI on the idjits writing this junk!

I don't know who said it first, but I very much like the thought that Artificial Intelligence is no match for the power of Natural Stupidity!

I don't know who said it first but R. A. Heinlein said it often. "You can't make things fool proof, fools are too clever." Or, "Ignorance can be cured, stupidity is it's own death sentence." He had lots of versions of the last one.
