Justin schmidt
Gentlemen, I desperately need a better anvil. I'm currently using a Chinese 55lb ASO. It works just not the best. I can get a post anvil that's 6x5.5x8 weighs I believe 85lbs with a hardy hole for just over 200. Or I can get the NC tool knife maker anvil for about 300. Right now I'm just making knives but In the future I would like to make some decorative stuff also. Leaf keychains, coat racks, etc. What say you all wise ones? ThomasPowers
Well you can buy the same chunk of steel for under US$20 at the scrapyard near my northern house; why don't you go there?
Justin schmidt
The scrap yards near me dont sell to the public or I would.
ThomasPowers
Any machine shops that may have drops? /
Daswulf
Ok, try the machine and fab shops. They usually hold on to larger "scraps" ( drops and end stock) and sell it fairly cheap since its usually already paid for.
Justin schmidt
Haven't seen any machine shops but I haven't really looked either. I'll check that out, thanks
51 Papy
Play attention (safely) to road construction company names then check to see if they are local. Find a local one and find their shop. They all have a shop. The hammer or the breaker bit make an excellent anvil as well as bucket pins. Got a local John Deere shop? Be prepared to hear no and keep looking. Fab shops and machine shops are places to hit too as mentioned above. I forget how many places I stopped before I hit the right spot. Keep at it! ThomasPowers
Bulldozer repair---bulldozers are built from improvised anvils! (and some pieces have sq hardy holes in them.) BTW did you read the improvised anvil thread? Also as usual: http://www.marco-borromei.com/fork.html few places in the USA do not have forklifts somewhere nearby! Justin schmidt
Thanks for the tips gentlemen. I used to use a 3in dia 4140 but it was just too small. Yeah I just got done reading through that thread. Man that fella with the 8x8x12 hunks of steel is a lucky guy!
