Frosty
I had the problem of people wanting my work and just never getting around to paying for it. About the only steady paying work I've done was making SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) fighting armor, helms and basket hilts for the rattan "swords." I solved that problem by charging 50% non refundable to take the order, the remainder on delivery, that's BEFORE you can have it. Solved that problem immediately, I haven't made any since. Works like a charm it has to be pretty minor work for me not to get 50% up front, materials at least. I let my paycheck job take care of the bills, it lets me enjoy smithing as a hobby. No pressure. Adry
To work as a blacksmith what you say is right, I know it well, in Europe it works like in the rest of the world. Unfortunately I do not work as a blacksmith, I'm a blacksmith, I'm not kidding if I say I work for free to do a good job. I have done many of my best jobs for people who could not afford them. I have no money but no debts either.
