for now general machinery,  we started the various sub sections to hold existing posts, when there seemed to have enough existing posts to warrant it.    not  just because they  are useful terms ;) so far they are not many sheer threads, maybe Glenn will start one ...

That'd be artificial sapphire and it's being made for nearly indestructible window, view ports, etc. Aluminum oxides are interesting stuff, Slag might have some good links to share. I know he tends to keep me reading well above my education. Thank you sir.

Start a thread about shears and see how many folk attend the party. If enough do I imagine Glenn will give it's own section. I don't think it'd be folly IF there's enough cutting edge info.

I'm still trying to figure out why "slitting shears" and "throatless shears" aren't the same thing.

Slitting shears are designed for straight cuts..  Throatless shears are designed for curved cuts with straight as a secondary offering..

What about Shear panty hose!

I'm having trouble imagining  needing shears for pantyhose. Don't wear them long enough you need shears to get them off? I mean . . . ewwwwww!

I used to be a field guy and know crusty from personal experience. A chance to hit the town public pool or school gym for a shower every couple few weeks was a luxury. You get used to people talking to you from a distance.

Working in the oilpatch in Oklahoma and "camping" in my old telephone company van; I had my limits.  I remember chopping a hole in a pond to bathe one still winter afternoon; but that wasn't as cold as using a stock tank fed by a windmill at midnight...with some wind.

Now I remember a class in oceanography where they discussed an "improvised tools" day they had held and used pantyhose as a net to pull behind a boat for plankton sampling...

Is Linsey-woolsey acceptable?

Linsey-woolsey (less often, woolsey-linsey or in Scottish English, wincey) is a coarse twill or plain-woven fabric woven with a linen warp and a woollen weft. Similar fabrics woven with a cotton warp and woollen weft in Colonial America were also called linsey-woolsey or wincey.
