Tyler Cech
I have a couple of really old rail road spikes that I dug up while metal detecting. Would they be an ok steel to clean off and forge?

No and No... . There are things they could be forged into. And depending How old, do you know how to test for wrought iron vs. Mild steel?, they would forge at different temperatures. In general for knives...no. unless.....
ThomasPowers
The HC RR spikes are at the upper end of Mild Steel in carbon content. Blades made from mild steel are often called shivs (improvised knives as are seen in prisons) rather than knives. A lot of people make KLO's from them; but there are so many easily and cheaply sourced alloys out there that are MUCH better than a spike. Also beware that getting spikes from a RR right away is a felony and the RR police have amazing powers especially in these Homeland Security days. Cavpilot2k
They will, however, make a decent throwing tomahawk, or if you forge weld a high carbon bit on the end a nice working hatchet, but that is a topic for another section...
