Lou Lou Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 Recently acquired an 1848 William Foster anvil. The name is backward on the anvil (Foster William). There is a crown above the name and a capital C under the date. Tried looking it up the name William Foster, but haven’t really found to much information. Any information on the anvil would be greatly appreciated. thank you Quote
ThomasPowers Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 If you looked it up in Anvils in America, that's basically what most of us know about them. If you looked it up on the net then what sites did you find? When I talked to Richard Postman about my 1828 WF and the possibility of refacing it as 90% of the original face was gone; he mentioned that they tended to be made from rather low grade wrought iron and so I probably would do best to forge weld the new face onto a slab of real wrought iron and do a wrought iron to wrought iron forge weld to the body. They are often found heelless or hornless due to weld failures; I hope I'm looking 1/2 that good when I reach 190 years old! Quote
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 Welcome to IFI Lou. I always suggest reading this thread to get the best out of the forum. https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/48833-read-this-first/ Pictures of your anvil might help with information, besides we love pictures. Quote
Frosty Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 Welcome aboard Lou Lou, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many of the Iforge gang live within visiting distance. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
