ausfire Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 I hesitate to post this in knife-making, as I know it's only a KSO. But it was fun to make a knife out of a 3/4 ball bearing. No heat treat and still have to put a sharp edge on it. The handle is an outback timber known as conkerberry. It might pass as a letter opener. Quote
JustAnotherViking Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 Looks like a perfectly serviceable butter knife to me. Quote
Steve Sells Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 you are more honest about what you made than most are about it too, Nice letter opener. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted May 3, 2018 Posted May 3, 2018 Good knife material; with a good heat treat it would be a knife. Make a dozen and use them as steak knives. Quote

Yes, I understood it to be good material. I have read a lot about heat treating, but it remains an area of the art in which I have little confidence. There are so many differing opinions and variables to consider. It would be nice to have the opportunity to watch first hand how the experts do it. Quote

ThomasPowers Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 Heat treat varies---sometimes a *LOT* from alloy to alloy so you would be hunting for someone using the same alloy as you are---or just follow the rules for that alloy *exactly* and bake your cake/////I mean heat treat your knife. Quote
John in Oly, WA Posted May 4, 2018 Posted May 4, 2018 Most likely you have some form of heat treat on it - whether it's left normalized, annealed, quenched, or tempered; it's a heat treatment. Quote
