I Forge Iron

Hi all! From the tip of Maine

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I have been wanting to bang on hot iron for a while now but never seemed to have the money to get set up. Now I have decided that I'm gonna see what I can come up with without spending a dime (at least until I have a dime to spend). So I decided on a charcoal forge, a railroad track, and some old hammers laying around the garage.

I'm no stranger at working with steel as I grew up on a farm and I'm a pretty hands on type of guy, but I want to be able to make everything I need from hammers to tongs. As I get better I would l would like to sell some of the stuff I make so there is quite a learning curve i have to deal with.

MY first project will be to make a forge I just need to wait for a little more snow to melt so I can find my scrap piles, i took a walk out there today to see what I could see and there is still a lot of snow. 20180403_102124.thumb.jpg.f2cc462a4ebe6c38b49f6935db864d8c.jpg

There is a Chevy impala and a few mustangs under this snow if you can believe it, also tons of scrap.

See you on the flip side!

Welcome aboard hammers. Well until you can find your scrap pile again, there is a lot you can read on the forum.

Cant get cheaper then a JABOD ( just a box of dirt) forge. And side blast works well with charcoal.

Thanks Daswulf and Irondragon. I was thinking a sideblast  JBOD would be just the ticket. I'll be starting a thread for that build soon. I have already read through most of the stickies I have been lurking around for a while. On the snow front, it looks like we are getting another 8 to 10 inches tonight and tomorrow, followed by More later in the week.

Seems like this winter just doesn't want to let spring get its foot in the door. I have a lot of outside projects that need done and can't get a start. Tho I don't have much  snow i still feel your frustration.

The only time I can't find the vehicles in my yard is summer time when I can't keep up with the grass cutting. :D

Welcome aboard, glad to have you. A JABOD is a good forge though considerably more expensive and difficult to build than JAHITG forge. (Just A Hole In The Ground.) I think you might have some seasonal issues though.

It doesn't take much to start smithing, smooth hammers are probably the hardest to come up with, though smooth cobbles work. That brings us back to the issue doesn't it, collecting boulders and cobbles is seasonal.

:)

Hi guys thanks for all the kindness. I know it's been a while since I started this thread but the snow is finally gone and I have begun work on my forge and blower. I'm going to start a thread for each of them in their respective areas for any suggestions that you might have, hope to see you there.
