Daswulf
Nice knocker Mike. I can see a Lot of different things that could go into one, and honestly they weren't on my list but might be now.

SFC Snuffy
I've done linseed oil on a couple of pieces. I find that a few coats, particularly if I coat it then put it back over the fire to "cook," repeating two or three times really gives it a nice, tough, black finish. Charles R. Stevens
I cheat, I pick up the iron gray hammer finish spray paint and go to town.
arkie
I like to use the Rustoleum Clear Matte spray. Lasts MUCH longer and better than the thin Krylon stuff. Never tried the hammer finish...might some day on a particular piece.
ausfire
I use Rustoleum Clear Gloss spray. Nice to see that Bunnings has it on the shelf now and we don't have to import it from the U.S. It's the best I have come across and it's cheaper than the others.
