The art of blacksmithing had a few testing tips, like heating the tip of stock to white hot, quenching the whole thing, then breaking off the tip then chip off pieces back up the stock till it snaps clean or close to clean and that is the color you want to shoot for for when you heat to harden, but I don't have the eyes for that yet. I guess Ill just keep checking out books and reading. It is just pretty baffling with all the different types of steel with all of the different hardening and tempering methods that are used for each specific one.
