Picked a 'great deal on a post vise

Met a guy at the flea market. Maybe got to excited because it was only  $75. I can make a mount and a spring but it seemed intact.  I get it home and notice a rattle when I remove the screw. It seems several inches of the screw are snapped off and floating in it. I'm not sure how useful it will be. Kinda down actually. Surprising how things like this can kick yeah when you don't see it coming

I have about 3" of throw. it is a large vise.  i have a smaller 4" underneath (that is the screw under it in the pic). I plan to go ahead and set it up.  I think your right, most of what I do will likely only involve the first bit anyway.  But, I guess I am still in the market for another vise :)

How large is it?  There are a bunch of threads on how to replace the screw/screwbox on a vice... Or you can know hunt for that one where they torched the leg off and left welding crud all over it---but has a good screw and screwbox...

As I consider the screw and screwbox to be about 80% of the vise I always check them out before buying!

  • 2 weeks later...

So just an update:

I heard from the picker where I purchased this vise and he had picked up a few more vises.  I bought  one that is complete, spring, mount etc.  for the same money.   Anyway, I have it at home and now I just need to build a stand for it.  I worked up a 36" stump for it but even after squaring it off the thing is just too wobbly so I will have to think it through this weekend.

So now to explain to the wife why i have three pole vises?  a small 4" one I got when I first got into smithing and the two newer ones.  I will post a picture when I get back out to the shop tomorrow.
