JHCC
MilwaukeeJon, raises an interesting point: the intersection between the practical aspects of our craft and the psychological. On the one hand, the purely functional considerations of moving metal are completely unaffected by how the smith feels about their anvil; it's purely a matter of force, direction, inertia, malleability, etc. On the other hand, we ourselves are not machines, and our emotional attachment to our tools and the aesthetic pleasure we derive from accomplishing a difficult task or improving our skill or tooling can be very much a part of how and why we do this. Different people have different temperaments, so how important that attachment and pleasure are will vary from smith to smith, but it's always going to be a factor.
