Jasent
Got all 16 leaf coat hooks forged today. Bit of clean up and paint and they will be ready for their new homes
CrazyGoatLady
Nice Jasen. Good work as usual. Must feel good to get that order filled. It takes me awhile to get much smaller items done in a day. I'm probably too picky and fiddly with my stuff though. Keep it up
Jasent
Paint is drying Thank you

Keep it up I get that way with new projects some times. With something like this I’ve now made 27 of these. Was kinda therapeutic as I didn’t need to think. Just let my hands do the motions. CrazyGoatLady
Yeah I hear that. Over the last month or two, I haven't gotten a lot of time at the forge. Not much of making the same things with everything recently being different Christmas gifts for different people. With the exception of the leaf key rings. They were getting quicker and not having to give it as much thought after awhile. When I start something completely new, it seems it takes forever and sometimes several of not so great efforts
Jasent
I wish I could just forge every day. But winter is about the only time I get to forge.
CrazyGoatLady
I get to do it mostly in summer when it's 105° outside
Jasent
Summer, spring, fall I’m working or hunting. Typically trap in the winter but just didn’t have a pull for it this year. Fur prices are low and I got steel in the bin. May as well stay home with the wife to be and pound steel.
CrazyGoatLady
Sounds like a good plan. I just have more free time in summer. Winter depends on how many bad weather spells we get. Then the animals are my first priority keeping everybody warm and fed and water that isn't frozen solid, etc.
Jasent
I got animals too. 5 cows 160ish chickens, 4 pigs and dog and cat. They come first. Then the fun
CrazyGoatLady
We have 28 chickens, 27 rabbits, 6 goats, 3 dogs and 3 humans besides myself. Roughly have half the livestock we did this time last year. Maybe I'll have a little more time this season. Blacksmithing is my luxury so unfortunately, it has to go the back burner sometimes. Your making good use of your time. I'm glad your getting to do so much of what you love
Jasent
Thank you. Sounds like you got your hands full as well.
Jasent
Made a set of bolster dies and butcher dies for my guillotine tool today. The bolster dies are a hair big for my monkey tool so one or the other needs a change. Wanting to play with some mortise and tenon joints
Jasent
Got an order for 6 more leaf coat hooks. Also they want to do a vertical coat stand from a small log and want me to do a base for the small log. Got plenty of research to do
ThomasPowers
I tend to paint things like the leaf hooks by suspending them on baling wire hooks so I can work all around them and then hang them out to dry.
Jasent
Yes that’s how I been doing it once I realized what pain it was doing it on the bench. Plus it was too cold in the smithy for the paint to cure well. Hung some bailing wire in the well house and that was so much better! Paint cures nice and I can paint the whole thing with out touching them. Got 7 hanging in there now that should be ready for pick up today. Been rearranging the smithy this week. Was just getting too cramped. Hopefully today I can work in there and see if I like it better.
CrazyGoatLady
I haven't painted anything in long while but I also used bailing wire. That stuff comes in handy for a lot of things. Sounds like your sales are doing good.
ThomasPowers
I have been known to scrounge baling wire off my neighbors with horses; it goes with the duct tape & WD-40.
Jasent
I have no shortage of wire on the farm. Literally find it everywhere it seems. These are the first products I’ve painted and I think they look nice. It’s faster than waxing or oiling. Im happy to get some returns on my forging. I should get some more steak flippers done up before spring. May do some bottle openers today if I get a chance. Broke my Ladle yesterday so that will be first fix. CrazyGoatLady
Yeah, I save it and I even save it from string bales. Although we switched to round bales. (Haven't found a use for that mesh though)But I still have a bunch of that stuff around. I'm happy for you. Paid work would be nice
Jasent
I’ve heard the mesh can be used to protect fruit trees from the birds. Sounds like a pain though.
Jasent
My first herb chopper today. Little cold shut at the handle but I think I can avoid that on my next one. This one turned out a bit small for my hands so next one will be 5 or 5.5” made from leaf spring.
CrazyGoatLady
That's a good idea for a use of that hay netting. I don't have any fruit trees unfortunately. Just one pecan tree that had a bumper crop this year. Nice work on the herb chopper. I like it. I have some leaf spring. Maybe I should try one. Jasent
You should. They are fun. We have half dozen apple treees and couple plum trees and a cherry that might come back(from the old residents) Luckily I had so 1/8” thick leaf spring https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HcTcFbxtiLU
