Ranchmanben
That’s what I figured but wasn’t sure. I’m not positive what alloy it is but I suspect it’s 6Al-4V.
jlpservicesinc
Thanks.. scrap had hanging around or ordered it special?
Ranchmanben
I was given a 4’ bar by a friend. He said it had been passed around to a few different shops but no one knew what to do with it. Other than tongs, I’m not really sure what would be a good use for it. jlpservicesinc
HUh, interesting.. I have a bar that I am or planned to make a pry bar out of.. I'll have to check it out.. The last Ti I forged turned black and it looked more like anodizing on alum then orange.. Interesting indeed.. Thanks Ben..

That’s why I think it’s the same grade.
ThomasPowers
Polish the reins up a bit and then anodize them to the wild Ti colours!

I tried it again after using the wire wheel and it looked even worse. Did the wire wheel again and called it quits. Here’s what they looked like blue/purple. jlpservicesinc
What kind of wire wheel are you using? From what I understand only a stainless steel brush should be used..
Ranchmanben
Hmmm. I used a plain twisted wire wheel. That must have been the problem.

I intend to draft them on paper (copy the design, that is!) and have a go at it. Do you mind? Would 3/8x1" starting stock seem right? At the shoulder, you seem to be offsetting from both sides.. any reason? Thanks, I have been avoiding tong making for too long. I just got into it and I love the puzzle and the satisfaction. Thanks for sharing!

Soulsmithing
JLP: Yup, I saw that vid quite a while ago. But it's my feeling Ranchmanben isn't splitting his stock in the middle.. Or maybe I'm wrong ;-)
jlpservicesinc
for myself the Jaw formation and offset is the key with this kind of tong vs rein forging or slitting so figured this was the key point.. Sorry..
Soulsmithing
No apologies required, really ;-) Sorry if my reply sounded raw.. English is not my mother tong (what an amazing pun!) I'm just curious as to how Ranchmanben did it...
