I Forge Iron

I used to work in a wrought iron shop when I was a teenager, and help, (try not to get in the way), of a farrier on the weekends.

Now nearing retirement, I'm looking to set myself up, to do some smithing again as a hobby to start, with the possibility of making some pocket change, (gas money), once I've worked up to it.

I enjoy the thinking process that working with fire and iron takes, and the skill and art it demands of you, as well as satisfying a need for hitting things with hammers

Welcome aboard Cager glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many of the Iforge gang live within visiting distance.

Sounds like you're center range of a hobby smith's intents. Do it for fun with a willingness to let it pay for itself if it works out that way. Playing with fire and hitting things with hammers is rewarding enough most days.

I find it very meditative. To control the work you have to control a lot of things. Fire management is high on the list especially if you're using solid fuel forge. You need to have your next move planned and hopefully be setting this heat up to make the next one easier and or more effective. There are a lot of things to get straight before you strike a blow and feel the steel bend to your will. What makes it so beneficial to a person's mood isn't that we can take out our aggression, anger, etc. on the steel but we MUST set those things aside to control all the other factors that must do the dance. You just can NOT control other things if you can't control yourself.

It's a good thing.

Oh we love pics: projects, shop, tools, equipment, finds, kids, pets, landscapes, just about anything you'd show a young child.

Easy peasy. Click on your name at the upper right of the screen. At the top right of the screen that opens select the button that says "Edit Profile."  Enter the info you wish in the screen that opens and save.

All your posts will be updated and we'll all know next time we open a post from you so there's no need to tell us. ;)

Been done already. Teach me to pay closer attention.
