I Forge Iron

Anvil identification. USA IAF

Now way back when I once melted some cast iron in my forge.  I was reading one of the old guesses about how they made damascus steel back in medieval times.  They suggested that they had layered cast iron and steel to get it.  So I made up a billet of a high grade cast iron---thin plates from a bathtub with some mild steel and heated it up towards welding temp.  The cast iron layers melted and when I tried to weld the billet; big globs of molten cast iron were squeezed out flying through the air until they suddenly burst into sparks! (I now know that they were decarbing in flight and burst into sparks when they became steel and started burning.)

Experimental archaeology can be fun when you try out some of the "theoretical" stuff they published 100 years ago!
