jpfabricator
Cast iron, or Stainless steel? Wich would be better, and what are the pros and cons of each for a fire box in a coal forge?
Iron Poet
I made mine out of 1/4" mild steel. In the 2 years since I've been using it I haven't noticed any degradation at all.
Kevin Olson
Oooh. Stainless would be cool. You could clean it out after using it, polish it to a shine and use it for a mirror :-) But realistically a 1/4 inch thick fire pot of mild steel will out live most of us :-)
Tubalcain2
mine is cast iron, and I have never had issues with it. making your own cast iron pot would be very difficult, but if you have the skills and equipment, it would be a cool project. a thick, well made SS pot would likely outlast a cast iron one. cast iron rusts really easily and you wouldn't have that issue with SS. C-1ToolSteel
Aren't we dodging the fact that SS is just plain too expensive? The objective of a fire pot is to hold coal. Enough said???
ThomasPowers
Clinker is not supposed to bond to cast iron very much. I don't believe I have tried it with stainless.
