Stig
Hi all Need help identifying my new anvil, and if its a good one, and possibly a price, want to know if i overpayed Just got it today, the only markings i can find is a worn down I.NASH &. i believe it is a Isaac nash and sons anvil, i think i saw 1917 on it, and markings are 1 1 6, i think thats 146 pounds. Its got a beautiful ring to it, and the rebound is great, mimimal pitting, some surface rust, one side is perfect, but the other is a little worn. Daswulf
Looks good and if it has good rebound on it then it is a good anvil. sorry I can't help with the maker. Get it mounted and start making stuff on it. See if you can sell the stuff you make and if you can then it'll pay for itself.
Stig
Thats fine Daswulf, thanks for answering Yeah i think its a good one, but i have no experience on these, it was sold to me wrongly and unseen as a Peter Wright anvil, just wanted to see if somebody knew anything about these. Been BS for some years now, and actually selling stuff, so im happy, but i got no clue on anvils, ive used some cheap pig-iron thing so this is my first proper anvil. Yuppiejr
Nice, it's all about that rebound, kind of cool that it's a quality but less common brand of anvil than you typically find out there in the wild - congrats!
Frosty
Welcome aboard Stig, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised how many Iforge folk live within visiting distance. Yeah, calling an anvil by the only name they know is pretty common for folk on Ebay or Craigslist. Oh don't forget old and rusty makes it an antique too, full of mystical and valuab&e powers! Do you know how to do a rebound test? Just drop a ball bearing on the face and estimate how far it bounces back, using a ruler isn't cheating. You can do a rebound test with a smooth faced hammer but it takes more experience to interpret. Test in a pattern over the entire face, you'll see better rebound over the center tapering off as you test towards the ends. This is normal. What the pattern is really looking for are "dead" spots where the face's heat treatment has been damaged or lost. Not only will the rebound fall off sometimes abruptly but the sound will go flat. Anvil hard faces can be damaged by abuse mostly shop baffoons using it for a cutting or welding table another is when the high carbon face breaks the weld to the wrought iron body, called delaminating. Stig
Hi Frosty, thanks, happy to be here Im located at the top of norway, so might be hard for people to get here Yeah got it today, i dont have any ball bearings, so i did it with a smooth faced hammer. I would guess the rebound, with slack grip (just steering it) is about 90% of the initial height. The ring is really crisp, and as you said, it drops off a little towards the back end and horn, but not much, just a small change in pitch. Seems to me that theres no pitch difference anywhere on the surface, the anvil looks old, but barely used. It was hard to find any markings, but i can see I.NASH, a 1917 i think, and 1 1 6. And i think i see a hook symbol at the bottom? Best regards Stig

Frosty
If you're getting 90% with a hammer it's excellent rebound. Just telling us where you live isn't going to stick in anybody's memory once we move onto another post. Of course you have broadband connection in your fortress of solitude forget I suggested anything. Truth is you never know when someone might get around your neck of the world you might like to meet up with and neither of you will know about a close miss. No big thing it's not a rule. Frosty
Aw you're doing just fine I mention the location thing a couple times to most folk if it isn't in their header, it's not a rule, you don't have to. You can do it anytime by clicking on your name at the top right of any page, click edit profile, make whatever changes you wish to and click save. Easy peasy. Again it's not a rule. We like you anyhow. Frosty The Lucky.
