Woohoo at last, old vise designs

Recommended Posts

I have spent ages  looking for a medieval vice, the earliest illustrations I have seen were in the Mendel Hausbuch from around 1515.

Now I have come across a book by Marriano Taccola - 1382-1453 who wrote two books - De Ingeneis and  De Machinis.

Think a medieval Leonado, and there it is............

I'm actually a bit surprised.  I would have expected a design that took cues from a shaving horse which would have been the most common "vice" to draw ideas from in that era.  Since threads, especially internal, were a pain to do I'm also a bit surprised the design went that way (vs wedges or cams)
