Sturtevant forge at auction

Recommended Posts

I am wondering if anyone can give me a rough estimate of what a Sturtevant H-2 forge with blower might be worth at an auction in North Central Kansas. Auction has a lot of blacksmiths tools and antiques so I am afraid I won't be able to "steal" it but need to know what it might bring. This is the only picture I could get from auction bill.

What's that pan packed with?  If someone used concrete, the value drops a lot so that would be critical to know.  Concrete will hold water like a sponge so if that has been in the weather, you'd never know if the junction between the concrete and iron has rotted it from the inside out.  Also, one would need to see if the pot is mostly burned out or still in great shape.

It isn't your area but the normal listing for similar around here -without- a blower...and clean so you could see what's really going on...without defects would be at about $ 600.  Note that is *asking* price, not actual sales price.  $ 400 is about the lowest asking I've seen for similar and it had some defects (needed new legs)

Your mileage may vary--and it's just my OPINION.  You'll definitely need to use your own brain, especially at an auction where auction fever can run rampant.

Thanks Kozzy, I put a phone bid in that is way below $400 just because I haven't run across one like this. Auctioneer is checking on the pot.

I know that this thread isn't about this but do you know anything about that anvil? it seems to have a very long horn and not much of a step.
