WyomingForger97
My highschool shop has an older anvil outside that's been untouched for at least 4 years now and I need help identifying it. It has the Indented Triangle with a C in its Face, and a raised Y on the backside Face, any ideas? I believe it to be approx. 120 lb. (55 kg.) ThomasPowers
Indented triangle with a C is the trademark for a Columbian cast steel anvil made in Cleveland Ohio, USA Considered to be a good brand.

WyomingForger97
Am I wrong to take emery cloth at 100/180 grit and a file and sand the top level, it has some normal dents and chipping
tdaleh
Yes you are wrong you can do more damage than good . The face is only so thick taking anything off of it takes away rebound and years of service.
ThomasPowers
Generally we say to stop with wire brushing as removal of face *is* damage! In 35 years of smithing I have seen under 5 anvils where I suggested cleaning the face with a mill or surface grinder. I have one anvil that had surface pitting from 50 years of condensation rusting; I wire brushed off the loose rust and started forging on it and just working on it is polishing the face out with no loss of uselife. Minor shining up happens under the hammer without damaging it. Frosty The Lucky.

Nobody Special
Unknotted wire brush, oil (or wd-40) and put it to work.
