missourikid
Hi I am looking to build a small to medium forge and was wondering if the no 10 soup can is a viable option for the beginner or would a shallow forge be best. My idea is to repair some of my farm's hand tools. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Charles R. Stevens
Depends on what fuel, and size/type of work. A #10 can with 2" off kool wool and a stabilizer wash and a large propane torch works well for small suff, as dose a small side blast charcoal or any style of coal forge. Gas forges tend to multiply so you have one that is appropriate to the work at hand, charcoal forges tend to go the same, but one can build a large side blast can be adapted to almost any job, as can a large side blast coal forge. I have both gas and charcoal forges
missourikid
I was thinking charcoal since I burn with wood and have a endless supply. I have a pitchfork along with a some ideas about making my own gigging spear heads along with spear points.
Charles R. Stevens
Then a small charcoal forge will work great. the first one is about 3 1/2" deep, 6" across with a 1/2" twear. The second is a bit of a fuel hog, but I can heat large stock out to 8" long (I have heated 2" round)
