Recommended Posts

I am visiting me girlfriend in Northern Scotland and they only burn peat up there for fuel and i was wondering if a peat fire would work for forging with?

As I understand it, it has been done, but I belive that there are two types of peat, on that is "fresh" and on that is partly on its way to becoming coal. I bet their is an old penchener around there that can give you a better idea of the ins and outs. As coal strikes and coal shortages (WWII) kept the practice alive.

Many years ago, I saw a fire at a compost packing plant. The plant processed peat and baled it for shipping/sale.

It melted the steel structure of the building.

I think there'll be plenty of heat in peat for forging.

Peat was historically used for forging where you couldn't get other fuels.  Probably help to tweak the forge design to use it.  (like buffalo chips were used to forge with on the American prairie)
