Judson Yaggy
What steels would you guys use for pattern welded billets that were intended for non-edge holding applications? For example a door handle, fireplace tool, or vessel. We are looking for good contrast and forgeability here, slicing thru armor not required! I'm more interested in modern alloys than having wrought iron in the mix for the sake of repeatability.
jmccustomknives
Nickle/mild steel would be my choice although one of many.
Judson Yaggy
Thanks JM, do you have a specific alloy of Nickel in mind so I can look up the forgeability rating? In response to a PM I just got on this subject I would like to clarify. I've made lots of damascus with higher carbon materials, but for purely ornamental uses am wondering what low C alloys would give a good pattern but still forge easily (closer to mild steel than 1090/L6). jmccustomknives
Admiral steel list their nickle sheets as 201. I believe there are limits to how many folds and such but for what you are doing I don't think that will be an issue. Looking forward to seeing what you make. Dodge
for cheap, there's always banding and band saw. (It makes nice blade material but no law says you gotta make blades...
