Everything Mac
Hi guys, I was working on a new smaller forge during my time off last week. Sold the old bottom blast forge with the intent of putting the cash into a big water cooled side blown forge build but I figured it just wasn't worth the effort at the moment given what I tend to make. Anyway I had enough scrap kicking around to make this. I realised I'd set the tue too high so added the extra material to the front. I'll be lining the bottom with a fire brick and either dirt or refractory or something - not sure yet. As I say I'd initially planned a water cooled tue but I just don't need it right now, a sacrificial tue worked fine for me for 5 years before I tried a bottom blast forge. I bent some 10mm cold to make a tool rack which may of may not get used. I never used the one on my last forge as all my tools were pretty close by. I'm going to have to get some oxy acetylene on the rack though just to even out the curve, it annoys me that it's not symmetrical... I've made it so the "fire pot" can be bolted to the stand so that I can dismantle it when I like. The tue is held in place with a grub screw (soon to be two) that what I can adjust it's position when needed. And allows for easy replacement eventually too. Once I'm happy with the position I'll run another bolt in there to keep it secure. Cheeky coat of paint. I'd like to spruce it up a bit with some sort of decoration. Just small details nothing too drastic. I'm also wondering about fitting a small chimney? Thanks for looking. Any thoughts for alterations would be appreciated Cheers Andy
Everything Mac
No love for this little build then? Your collective thoughts on the overall design and adding a chimney would be appreciated. All the best Andy

Everything Mac
Haha. Ah well, beggars can't be choosers eh. I can't imagine the pair will last too long anyway. I just fancied something other than rusty brown for a change. Cheers Andy
Ridgewayforge
Looks great! What are you burning in it? Coal?
Charles R. Stevens
I like the cut lines. I don't see. The need for more than dirt
Everything Mac
Thanks Charles. I am certainly leaning towards dirt rather than gaffing about with any kitty litter etc. I spent a bit of time trying to get the lines roughly symmetrical. I'm sure it's way off perfect but I'll happy with the overall look baring the tong rack. Ridgeway - I'll be using coke initially but I will switch back to charcoal eventually when I can make a decent quantity of it. ThomasPowers
I'd just reposition the tue iron; filling it with dirt will make it heavy and not "sling it in the back of the vehicle when it's cold"-able
Everything Mac
I doubt it would be that heavy. My old forge was a bit too heavy, I'll have to play around with it when I get home to see how it goes. I'll get some more pics up in a couple of weeks when I get ashore. Cheers guys Andy
ThomasPowers
But unless you are going to pour out the dirt and re pour it in, it doesn't travel well---and holds the heat longer when it's time to shut down. Hmm what about cutting a hand hold in the back to make it easier to haul.
Charles R. Stevens
Lol, nice to be able to learn from Tommas' mistakes.

Charles R. Stevens
Lol, Tommas it's a compliment. Doers make a lot more mistakes than talkers
Charles R. Stevens
Mac, how much would you gain if you angled the twear down, say 22.5 deg?
Everything Mac
I'm not too sure Charles. The pipe that was in there for these pics wasn't any good as I'd taken it to the grinder to thin it down for another project that it didn't work for. It was just left over scrap. I need to add another grub screw yet. It looks deeper than it it but I'm inclined to leave it that way so I have plenty of room for a firebrick or dirt directly under the tue. It's a pain being so far away from home otherwise I'd go and play around with it. Thomas - when I say portable I really mean that I can move inside my shed when I go back to work. I've heard that Mark Aspery combines dirt and ash with a little water to form a hollow in the forge. All the best Andy
