Branstetter
I found a railroad spike in a box of old square nails that I inherited from my grandfather. After reading a bunch of stuff here on this site I got the brilliant idea to give it a try. Today I made my very first, and I'm certain it will not be my last, attempt at making something resembling a tomahawk, I think.
mitch4ging
Looks good for a first attempt, your braid came out great. but...won't your head (tomahawk) sling off the first time you swing it? Or do you have it secured somehow? Also...welcome!
SpankySmith
I like the braid handle, nice!
ThomasPowers
it looks like a very nice decorative piece, AKA "wall hanger".
Branstetter
Wall hanger for sure. It was simply an experiment to see what I could do with it. Certainly not intended for actual use. I've read and heard all about using the wrong steel for the wrong purpose. I've been in the fabricating business for many years and have had long discussions with metallurgists and engineers regarding materials and their uses. Then you have the guys that know better than all of those "educated" people. They know because that's what they know, ya know. Although those conversations can be entertaining at times, especially when you can get them going about how wrong you are. I almost forgot to ad Thanks to all for the feedback. I found IFI a while back and really like how much everyone shares about the things posted. I'll stick around for awhile.
ThomasPowers
Be careful though we have a few folks who are both metallurgists and smiths on here and at least one who is a metallurgist for a large open die forging company!
Branstetter
Those are the folks that I love listening to. And usually very evident when they do. No disrespect intended. If my wording came across that way.
HIGHSIDER
Oh that's interesting. Very nice work. Can you talk me through the braided handle. I would love to learn more on how that was done. Thanks for any input.
