I Forge Iron

Possibly a handy trick on the anvil

Recommended Posts

Was watching a tong making video on YouTube and the guy draws a bunch of reference lines with a sharpy before he starts.  The way the camera angle around 5 min in a light bulb went on for me!  Just lay the stock corner to corner on the hardy hole,  tip up and the shoulder can be started on the far side nice easy 45deg without having to draw any lines that will rub off when you need them.  Just have to have a little energy left to play after the day job to give it a whirl.

Dogsoldat,

The video you linked didn't work for me.  I'm not sure what you mean with the hardy hole.  It sounds like you're using the hardy hole edge as a fuller but I'm not sure.

Mark Aspery has an ABANA tutorial video on making a tscrolling wrench and he uses the corner of the hardy hole to forge a relief on the outer side of the inside jaw where it meets the handle.  It's a subtle touch that makes the tool look nicer and potentially reduces stress risers formed at a 90 degree junction. Here's the link:

The light bulb went on for me then since it hadn't occurred to me to use the hardy hole in that way.

I believe that Dogsoldat was using the hardy hole to align the piece 45 deg on the "far edge" of the anvil as most hardy holes are fairly square and oriented with sides parallel to the side of the anvil so the parallel lines theorems of geometry hold true and was not using the hardy hole to form on.  Dogsoldat?

I believe you have the intent of Dogsoldats' post. I think he's using the hardy hole to mark the sections to isolate.

Actually forging in the hardy hole would be more problematical than handy. Sharpies and soap stone marks would be FAR easier.
