ausfire
Broke an axle in a race car. Here's a pic with the new one. Is the old shaft good for making tools or anything? A hammer perhaps? I only ever made one hammer and it was a bit ordinary. The shaft is 35 mm diameter.
njanvilman
The axle should be a very high quality steel. Perhaps contact the manufacturer to find out what type of material is used so that you will do the correct heat treating. Or just try something and experiment a bit. ThomasPowers
Yes good tooling and hammer steel indeed! Not usually high enough carbon for bladesmithing though IIRC.
John McPherson
Here in the home of many NASCAR shops, axles are a treat to get at iron-in-the-hat drawings. Typically a low alloy/high strength steel.
