FireInTheForge02
Hi all, I recently purchased an Australian made Odywer anvil. It is around 44lb, got it from a farrier's supply in Brisbane, and posted (yes, i posted an anvil) up here. I have had it for about 6 months and it has a few dents and bangs in it. But whats really pulling me up is that they say they are cast iron, but the ring (when unbolted) is about the same as a cast steel one. I also got a 3/4 round magnet and dropped it on to the face. It bounced right up into my hand. it might be the weight, I don't know. In the pics, there is obviously a plate of some sort welded on to the body. maybe the bigger types, the 95 kg anvil, might be entirely made of cast iron. Maybe i could try (if the face is steel) hardening it if it isn't already hardened. Does anyone know about this type of anvils? Thanks
arftist
What is your issue? The anvil is too soft? If it was pure cast iron it would be softer than cast steel. Solid cast iron anvils are not even considered real anvils. There is nothing to indicate a plate welded on, especially since the plate has cams cast into it. Did you mean 44KG? 44LB isn't much of an anvil. What are the dents from? Are you working cold metal? Surely the anvil is harder than red hot metal? If they are from misses then you should anneal your hammer until you develop enough control to hit the metal instead of the anvil. OK I found them. The 44lb anvil is a portable farriers anvil, made for reshaping pleasure shoes hot. In other words very light work. It isn't even designed for forging, just adjusting already made shoes. 2. It is cast from 4140 tool steel. pretty far from cast iron, and what most companies are casting anvils from. If you really believe there is a hardness problem, have the hardness tested. You may have a warranty claim, but I think you just bought a lot less tool than you need.
Damastang
A mate of mine has the same anvil, he has no problems with it. Where abouts in FNQ are you located if you don't mind me asking? Cheers
FireInTheForge02
hey, same as you damastang, in the tablelands. I got it form Stockmans Supplies in Brisbane and sent up here. What weight is your friend's anvil if you don't mind me asking?
Damastang
Same weight as yours, bought from the same place I believe. There is also another smith near Malanda I know who uses the 95KG one and doesn't seem to have any dramas. I was considering buy one but I was lucky enough to score an old wrought body steel face anvil. Cheers
FireInTheForge02
Oh yeah Damastang. That would be a nice score. I also sometimes work on an English made Mousehole anvil. They also have the same composition (wrought iron body). I think the guy in Malanda is a farrier, and his ad is in the Tablelander every now again.
