Greim
Hi! Just made my second barrel of charcoal yesterday, only to find it full of exremely white smoke this morning, is it supposed to do this? Or is it burning all the coal from the inside?
bigfootnampa
You do NOT make charcoal with COAL!
Greim
No i do know that :), my bad for typing coal instead of charcoal, i was just wondering if its a part of the process or is there some pieces burning inside the barrel?
Frosty
There's probably still a little raw wood smouldering in the barrel. Did you seal it air tight when you were finished? If not it's going to keep smouldering till there's nothing but ash left. Either seal it mostly air tight, I used to plug the bung hole with fiberglass insulation, completely air tight will crush the drum as it cools so a little pressure equalization if a MUST. the insulation will prevent air circulation so the combustion will stop once the oxy is consumed and the embers cool. If you open it while they're still above ignition temperature it will reignite and charcoal is a darned good insulator. Do NOT move it into the shop!!! Frosty The Lucky. 781
When the charcoal is done you need to stop the barrel from getting air or you have ash and no coal
