Frosty
It wouldn't be a very good axe but it'd be better than probably the first couple thousand years of axes. this is exactly where you NEED to find the junkyard steel posts and the shop tests. There are lots of steels that are fine for axes of one kind or another. But just saying axe is entirely too vague to expect to be able to choose steel to make one. What kind of axe? Is it a camp hatchet? Do you need to be able to drive pegs with it, or split kindling at the stove? A felling axe? Double bitted limbing axe? Splitting axe? Maul? Broad axe? There are just so many kinds of axes and so many uses the type of steel and finished hardness/tempers can be very different. I'm thinking you need to gain some more experience and you'll begin to know what works best for a given purpose. Start out by finding a couple old leaf springs and an axle. Those two common medium carbon steels will make a dozen kinds of good working axes and hatchets. they're also forgiving in the heat treating, you can make moderate mistakes without them failing completely. Gergely
Hi Natkova, Try the local scrapyard for springs, bearings and axles, as Frosty mentioned. At the beginning these are the objects you can do all the tooling and axes and stuff from: Caterpillar track pins of old tanks are one of the best material you can find in Eastern-European scrapyards. Rare find though. Happy hunting Gergely
