welcome to IFI

there is plenty to read on this site that will help

for an anvil you do not need a traditional 'london pattern anvil'

a piece of rail track is a good start or almost any large chunk of metal.

a solid fuel forge can be made easily, it is a fire with air blown into it

Welcome to IFI,  take a look at the Blacksmithing, General Discussion section.  There's a pinned post covering what you are asking about.  Lots of helpful folks around here - they're more helpful if you don't repeat questions they've seen hundreds of times.

It may not seem like it but there's a huge range of possibilities that fall under the heading "blacksmithing".  There are folks here who're doing miniature decorative work, and then there are folks doing huge structural installations.  The recommended tools will tend to vary accordingly.

There's a lot to learn and this site is a great resource to find what you need.  Good luck.

Greetings Al,

You have a great resource if IFI..  As to getting started try to find some locals that can assist you in finding some material to work with...  You don't need much to get started , just the basics.  The more you do the hungry you will get..  The hardest thing to do is get started.  Just do it.  Follow this thread with what other new smiths are doing and do likewise..  Do not hesitate to ask and post pictures.   We all can help and are more than willing to assist you..  Welcome to the addiction.

Forge on and make beautiful things

Welcome aboard Jorge, glad to have you. Another good place to research besides IFI are Alex Wygers, "Complete Modern Blacksmith" it's like a handbook for improvising all kinds of metal working set ups. Another excellent low budget beginner books is "$50 Knife shop." by Wayne Goddard. Wayne deals in this book with turning out top rate knives with almost no tool investment. His main point being that the tools don't do the work, the fanciest shop in the world can't make a knife. It's the learned skills of the smith that that makes knives or whatever.
