Guest archerstu
Hello all! this is my first post on this forum (not sure if this belongs here or in forge sub forum). I'm 18 years old and beginning blacksmithing as a hobby. I have been attending hammer ins over the past year when I started building a propane forge in my welding class. Over this summer I acquired a coal forge from an auction in Iowa. The original "ventilation system" is partially intact and I wish to restore it in order to protect my lungs and make the use of the forge more enjoyable. What I am wondering is if anyone on this forum has seen a forge with a similar ventilation or if someone could help me design a fix. From my research it seems that it is some type of side draft "ventilation system" or there was some type of hood over the forge. Any help would be greatly appreciated. this is a top view showing the hot air recycling pipe and the cold air intake. Under the cold air intake there is no sign of some type of flow gate to control the amount of incoming cold air. The blower is marked Buffalo Forge 200 Buffalo NY
Jim Coke
Greetings and welcome Archer, I have had many forges and I have never seen such a system... I think it is someones failed idea and plain and simple it would not work... Judging by the thickness of the metal on the box it is something that was not original... I would remove the box and the inlet and build yourself a side draft hood... Lots of references on this forum.... That would be a great project for your welding class.. Looks like you have a great start on your blacksmithing journey. Good luck... Forge on and make beautiful things Jim
Frosty
Welcome aboard, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised at how many of the IFI gang live within visiting distance. That's an interesting forge and has my interest piqued. I'd just be guessing if I said anything else so I'm just going to keep an eye on this thread and learn something. Frosty The Lucky.

Jim Coke
Greetings again Archer, I looked up your forge in my references and sure enough buffalo number 660 induced draft forge... It originally came with a water tank and a hood over the firepot.. I guess I spoke too soon... Good luck Jim
swedefiddle
Good Morning, Does the tuyere come up the center of the bottom tray or is it a side draft? It would make sense that if it is a side draft, the water tank cools the nozzle. Maintain your first thought about making a propane forge, way better for you and the neighbours. Guest archerstu
Thank you Jim for finding the name I was able to find an image of it after Google searching. buffalo made a forge with that set up on it. a friend of mine has one still in operation in his shop in north carolina. i might can get some pics later when i get back over there . joe Joe I would really appreciate seeing pictures of your friends forge when you have the chance. Thank you. Good Morning, Does the tuyere come up the center of the bottom tray or is it a side draft? It would make sense that if it is a side draft, the water tank cools the nozzle. Maintain your first thought about making a propane forge, way better for you and the neighbours. Neil The Image I found on Google illustrates the tuyere very well, it comes up from the bottom. As some clarifictaion I completed building two propane forges last year as a Junior, one for myself and one for my welding class. I enjoy using both forges each have their own advantages. And luckily I live on a small hobby farm with plenty of room from neighbors :). Thank you again everyone! I look forward to learning more from this forum, and Ill make sure to post photos of the finished hood.
