Glenn
In the chat room tonight the discussion was about weird questions that have been ask on IForgeIron. Then the following question was put on the table. Anyone have a side gear for for the differential of a Delehaye 135 built in France in 1936? Or an alternator or starter? There was no one in the chat room that had that part so I thought I would ask the same question here in hopes of getting an answer or at least where to start looking. The fellow asking the question works on and repairs these classics so the question is a request for information and parts and is legitiment. IForgeIron would enjoy hooking him up with the parts. (grin) Any help would be appreciated.
doc
He should try asking over at The Old Motor or Practical Machinist but I'm sure if he's in the business he already has.
woodsmith
We have priced having one such bevel gear made, and eventually found a shop that would actually give a price instead of just saying itll be too expensive, We are waiting on this a bit as it is quite expensive. I am primarily a fabricator/designer not an expert on parts sources for rare/foreign autos, so thanks for the input. Good parts and material sources are really valuable. even though I made the request largly as a joke in chat, (because it is so off topic for the site) I appreciate the thread. If anybody else is looking for an odd tool or part feel free to ask me I guess, we have a bunch of old Jag and Mercedes stuff laying around. BIGGUNDOCTOR
Hemmings motor news, possibly EBay in Europe, or even check with some auto museums for help. Do you have a gear to copy? 1936 should have a generator, not an alternator. Good luck on the search.
woodsmith
Yes we have the gear to copy, it the differential gear that attaches to the splined end of the axle shaft, right and left are the same, and we have another complete assembled diff for reference also. I think we have gotten estimates to reproduce one such gear ranging from $3500 to maybe $1700, when we get farther into the build we may have to go for this if it is our only solution. Yes it uses a generator, bizarrely we found one that matches up in a little old shop right near by in Mn when we had them rebuild the starter on our first basket case restoration. Thanks again for the input Woodsmith
BIGGUNDOCTOR
Man, that is steep for a gear. I am a toolmaker, so I do understand how a gear is made. Try checking on www.practicalmachinist.com , you may find someone that can help you out, and yes, there are shops that use the site not just hobbyists.
