lummisam
A friend offered to sell me a very nice looking anvil. It is roughly 175lbs, low wear, good rebound, and a nice ring. He wants 3$ per pound. I am concerned with the face of the anvil. There is a crack on one side between the face and the body approx. 3" long from the hardie hole forward. Additionally the face depth appears to taper. The face is 1/2" thick up to the hardie hole and then tapers to 1/4" at the heel. I can't identify any sort of brand or markings, other than a few isolated numbers on the back of the foot. He says he will not negotiate on price, should I take it or leave it?

Kal
It may not be a crack as such. It may be the line where the face plate was attached, forge welded on, when the anvil was built. If it rings the same and the rebound is the same throughout the length of the face I'm thinking it is all right.
ThomasPowers
Check the ring of the area in question. Not knowing your location I can't speculate much on the price; be kind of expensive in Ohio and not too bad in some of the anvil poor states and WAY overpriced for a damaged anvil---how much money should I get for my pickup? jeremy k
Thomas - I'm curious as to what you get for your PU, as mine may go for more due to the fact it's got 475K plus tried and true miles on it - it's a clear winner for getting me were I need to go. 475K of proof. Just curious.
lummisam
Here is a picture. The crack is the white area. it's about 3/16" deep testing with a utility knife blade.
jeremy k
I'd roughly say(WAG) that 90% of any anvil work is done about an inch toward the horn from the crack and more so a few inches back from the step - buy it and use it!!!!
ThomasPowers
Yup that looks like face delam starting and drops the price by about $2 in my book just like I would ask the going rate for a 4 year old truck with no damage for my PY that was built in 1988... arftist
No way that's worth full price. Walk away.
