tinningdiy
Hello all. Came across this forum and it seems to be the most comprehensive in both members and info. I am interested in getting into re tinning copper cook wear as I have just bought some lovely old copper sauté pans but the tinning is wearing thin on a couple. Also I would like to possibly start a re tinning service from here in Cornwall. The home of the Tin Miners. Sounds very romantic eah. I know it is a pretty dirty job though!! and am used to working with chemicals. I have already posted on the Copper section but another hello in the correct section now. Cheers All and hope to expand my skills and hopefully help others too. Steve

Wayne
Hello and welcome,' You will surely find a load of info here, I would also take a look at tin tinkers ( cannot remember if it is .com or .org) site as they cover a lot of stuff as well Wayne
tinningdiy
Hello. Same as in the videos I have seen really, but will use lint free cotton rag. I have used every type, I think, of weave fiberglass/carbone/kevlar as I am a boat builder by trade and I know it is probable that there will be lose fiber fragments. Once these are encapsulated in tin it could possibly make for a rough finish on the tin??? Plus I think the old rag is a more traditional way of doing it? If it in't broke, don't fix it. The problem is that the videos I have found do not show any prep or how to use ammonium chloride as a flux. I also have a small block of rosin, but I would think the chemical method would give a better result?? Cheers, Steve

Wayne
I have seen a demo on dvd where the guy doing the tinning on new brass/copper just used a squirt of liquid flux in the pan before rubbing over with the tin then with a bit of wall insulation.
