Frosty
Retorting amalgam is a poor and unreasonably dangerous method of extracting mercury. Mercury vapor has transdermal properties, just breathing gear isn't good enough for prolonged or repeated exposures. Using mercury, a bit of nitric acid and a drop of dish soap in the gold pan upped the recovery considerably. Before anybody starts shouting about using mercury in stream/river water, If we didn't find more mercury in the concentrates than we put in there was little chance of precious metals. We separated amalgams all the time and NEVER retorted it. DON'T retort mercury! PERIOD! Frosty The Lucky.
