Need good punch for first project

Recommended Posts

I just started in blacksmithing, and my first project is a bushcraft knife.  I already have the shape.  The problem, is while I was drifting out the first pin hole for the handle, I've broken three punches.  I'm working with 1095 steel.  Does anyone have a recommendation on good quality punches that won't break?

1095?---For automotive coil springs? Not in my experience, Francis where are you getting that info?

For drifting I like to use bull pins; I tend to pick up any I find at the fleamarket for US$5 or under...

For punches and slitting chisels I like high alloy steels like H13 as they have high hot hardness
