Francis Trez Cole
Here are a few tools that I have built in to my vice stand. the first is an adjustable table to help support the bottom of a piece of steel being up set. Then this is the latest addition it is an adjustable support arm for when I do filing. you clamp the item to be filed in the vice and the area you are working on is supported off to the side of the vice hope you find these tools use full
vapremac
Here's a block that mounts in a vise, this particular one accepts hardy tools with a one inch shank. Also have another that will accept an inch and a quarter shank. Really handy tool to have around.
Jim Coke
Greetings Vapremac, That sure is a handy tool... I bought 2 on EBay for use in my flypress.. I found them also very handy when you need more than one bottom tool in one heat.. Also for detail work on an swage or bending fork and others at vise height. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim
Francis Trez Cole
vqapremac that is a neat little block would come in handy. I made a striking anvil that is free standing my vice is too tall for that setup. For filing your vice should be set up at elbow height. vapremac
Francis Trez Cole, I agree, a vise set at the proper height for filing can make a big difference in how you feel at the end of the day. Those vise blocks are a really handy multiuse tool, I know Jim Coke really likes the ones he has.
danguite
During a workshop this weekend I was doing a fair bit of filing and used one of these, which I intend to make as soon as I'm able: The picture was found on the Persimmon Forge blog, it helped reduce the footprint of the vise on the piece I was working on, I thought they were really neat. ThomasPowers
It's interesting to note that post vises don't come at a "standard height" there is quite a lot of variation in them. So it's handy to have a "striking postvise", a "filing postvise" etc
