Joel OF
Hi guys, I've searched for threads on this already but didn't find any... As of late I've been getting really crumbly annoying clinker that's time consuming to remove as it breaks up easily. I normally get convenient doughnut shaped hard clinker that I can hook out in one go. I have a bottom blast forge, I burn coke and I've not been doing anything different. I typically clean out the clinker after lunch (I let the fire die over my lunch break) and once the next morning - twice in a 24 hour period. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to why all of a sudden this might be happening?
John B
Hi Joel, It may be the type of coke you have, The Monkton forging coke which is the basic coke for forging almost entirely used in the UK was altered by the manufacturer and this was the result, Because the blacksmithing community as a whole do not use that much of a significant amount of their output (it is the byproduct of a chemical manufacturiong process) then we don't have much leverage on them to change it back They did say they would be altering it again but not to what degree and when, so you may have got some of this fuel, and its just a case of learning to manage it, it seems to produce more clinker than previously of the type you describe, You may find it helps to run a little more air than you did, and to leave it running rather than constantly/frequently adjusting the air input. I am informed Chris Topp is importing coal which is excellent for forging, with very little clinker and at a competitive price to coke, on sale to all and can be ordered on line for delivery. Monkton are the manufacturers/processors and supply the UK distributors, Date of change not that recent, but a lot of stock about, and you don't know when it was originally produced or how long it has been in the stockyard. Joel OF
Good point. Thinking about it now I have been noticing some weird chemically smells recently, smells like plastic burning.
