njanvilman
It looks like a casting of recycled brass. Probably made at one of the small foundries that exist all over the region.
greendick2991
any ideas on a date? from the south staffordshire regiment cap badge i date it between 1900 to 1930 would that be correct?
John McPherson
Not an expert by any means, but the poor overall quality suggests a recent copy of an older original. Originals were cast in mulled, sifted powdered sugar fine sand with few bubbles, with fine detail, well finished. Fakes and knock-offs are often cast from worn originals in large grained beach or stream sand, from poor quality metal, poorly finished. The same holds true for cast iron objects flooding the market. ThomasPowers
It definitely was cast, it's quite visible in how the regimental emblems attach to the body of the piece. Is there a regimental historian you can contact? I've been to one regimental Museum in the UK and they were a massive resource on all things pertaining to their regiment. Dan P.
You found it in Afghanistan? Strange. Could be an antique. Plenty of rough castings from back in the day! Could be Indian made. Certainly an unusual object.
