Rhettbarnhart
My buddy royce came over this afternoon and I instructed him on how to make tongs.I marked out the jaws, boss, and reins;I then forged one half of the tongs while he watched and in between my heats he forged his half.I didn't know how they would come out with two different people workin on one set of tongs. I think they came out great!! My advice to guys making their first set of tongs is to measure and mark the lengths of the jaws, boss, and reins. This will make sure your two tong blanks proportions are the same, this is a good thing :)
Rhettbarnhart
I would also suggest people to make a set of flat jaw tongs before moving on to other tongs. When u get more accustomed to making tongs you can move on to something like these bolt tongs I recently forged. 5starhobo (blake)
Do you have a picture of the stock you started with and the marks showing what is what? Other than that they looked like they turned out well for 2 people! :D
Frank Turley
I like this. On the flat jawed tongs, the one to two inches or so of the rein adjacent to the rivet boss has a curve thus moving the reins away from each other and at the same time, parallel to each other when in use, and this helps.
