Jason M
I'm going to an auction tomorrow. They listed an anvil and posted a small picture. It looks like a Peter Wright or other good anvil. Does anyone know what is the smallest anvil that Peter Wright made?
Phil H
What's that behind it? If it's a ratchet strap buckle then the anvil must be pretty small. Maybe it's a salesman's sample.
Jason M
It's a floor jack. I happen to have one that's almost the same. I'd say it's safe to say that the anvil is 12 to 15 inches long.
Black Frog
I believe there was an 11 or 15 pound PW up for sale a few years ago. I think it sold for thousands. ..
VaughnT
That floor jack as a scale, I wouldn't put the anvil over 50lbs - maybe 65lbs if the jack is larger than mine. Still, the anvil looks to be in good shape, and the cutter could be useful. I'd certainly entertain the idea of buying it if I needed a small anvil. If the condition is very good, it might be worth a lot of money. Everything would depends on how well you clean it up and present it. Everything Mac
There was a chap on here selling one a few months back. I forget what size it was exactly but well under 30lbs. It was an absolute beauty. I was going to buy it but couldn't justify it at the time. As I understand it a collector from the US bought it and had it shipped over... Jason M
Well I'm at the auction now. It's an Acme anvil. About 24 " long. I'm unfamiliar with this brand.
Black Frog
Acme was made by both Hay Budden and Trenton at differnt times.
Jason M
Are there marks on Acme anvils that tell the weight?
Black Frog
If made by HB, weight usually on the side below logo. Treton had weght on the foot below horn. Both companies marked weight in pounds.

VaughnT
Overall length times the overall height, then subtract 110. There was a thread on IFI not too long ago that said this is a good formula for approximating the weight of the anvil. I haven't tried it yet, though. 24" OAL isn't a bad size for general stuff in a small hobby smithy. It doesn't take much of an anvil to make hooks and such. Jason M
Well I didn't get it. It went for $275 and I wasn't willing to pay that much. I did get an Indian Chief vise for $27.50 which I'm happy with.
Ridgewayforge
Not a bad score, if you got a vice out of the deal!
Rich Hale
Amazing how many folks had a childhood without the roadrunner and Wile E coyote!
VaughnT
A post vise for less than $50? That's a very good deal and well worth going to the auction!
