I Forge Iron

Just Right Magnet

Greetings all,

It's time for ( why didn't  I think of that )   It's been a long time without IFI so I would post a few of my famous shop tips.
Hang your magnet on a rope close to the forge. It's easier to test for critical when bringing the temp up for hardening. It's a lot easier than trying to bring the magnet to the work..

Forge on and make beautiful things

I used to keep my magnet on a work stand. Never a problem.

After having my gold wedding ring wear through 4 times I had it repaired and put it in a box.

Dave @ Studio4 made me one from Damascus. It is a beautiful piece of art and I like it better than the gold one. Great work!

A few days later I was working with the work stand and kept feeling something grabbing my hand. After the heat was gone I played with the stand for a couple minutes and finally realized that the Damascus was sticking to the magnet.

Watcha gonna do?

Dave

Not a metallurgist, but as I understand it, plain carbon steel loses its attraction to a magnet about 100 degrees below critical temperature. Furthermore, the magnet idea for finding critical is not a "lead pipe cinch" when it comes to alloy steels.

I am open to additions or corrections.
