Jim Coke
Greetings all, It's time for ( why didn't I think of that ) It's been a long time without IFI so I would post a few of my famous shop tips.Hang your magnet on a rope close to the forge. It's easier to test for critical when bringing the temp up for hardening. It's a lot easier than trying to bring the magnet to the work.. Forge on and make beautiful things Jim
windancer
I used to keep my magnet on a work stand. Never a problem. After having my gold wedding ring wear through 4 times I had it repaired and put it in a box. Dave @ Studio4 made me one from Damascus. It is a beautiful piece of art and I like it better than the gold one. Great work! A few days later I was working with the work stand and kept feeling something grabbing my hand. After the heat was gone I played with the stand for a couple minutes and finally realized that the Damascus was sticking to the magnet. Watcha gonna do? Nobody Special
Good idea, right now mine's stuck on the side of the forge.
Frank Turley
Not a metallurgist, but as I understand it, plain carbon steel loses its attraction to a magnet about 100 degrees below critical temperature. Furthermore, the magnet idea for finding critical is not a "lead pipe cinch" when it comes to alloy steels. I am open to additions or corrections. Sayings and Cornpone "No griping on the trail." ptree
The magnatism leaves plain steel at the Currie point. Close enough on many plain steels. All bets are off on the allow steels.
