Reverend Boxcar
Here is my new anvil, It needed a little bit of cleaning up it took some work but I think she looks pretty good. It had spent the last 20 something years in a shed which was occasionally water for prolonged periods of time. Any idea what kind it might be? I think it weighs about 150. The only markings I can find on it are a stamped 0 and a 5 nothing else.
Michael
Sure looks Peter Wright to me. Too bad about the hardy, but at 150 lbs it still very usable. You'll have to get creative if you want to use bottom tools, nothing wrong with that. Good find!
njanvilman
Boiled linseed oil applied liberally to all of the surfaces will keep the rust away, especially since you are in a humid part of the country. Using the anvil will keep the top working surface rust free.
yesteryearforge
A peanut oil soaked towel will do the same thingJust be careful and don't let anyone with peanut allergies lick your anvil
Reverend Boxcar
Yeah the hardie is a little disappointing, but I had a great face and a nice ring. I am going to try put a hardie holder on my vice stand. A peter Wright you say? thats great news! I didnt know I should be boiling the linseed oil, Ive just been rubbing it down unboiled. ThomasPowers
Boiling linseed oil was an old method to start it polymerizing faster. Now days they do it by adding things like cobalt to the oil. Check you linseed oil bottle it may be "boiled Linseed" already. If not; well sunshine can help speed up the "drying" action though that works better out here with a HIGH UV index than at sealevel...
