jeremy k
This is the first forging I did on the 100lb LG I just restored. I started with a 6" length of 2-1/2" round. I tapered half of it and then you can see what I did with it after that. Finished height is 16" 7-4-
njanvilman
Very cool forging. You must have had fun handling that length in and out of the fire. That design could be adapted to all kinds of projects. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your hammer.
Black Frog
Holy cow is this cool! This pic gets saved into my "Cool Stuff" folder for future reference and stealing of ideas.... ;) Very nice indeed!
jeremy k
I forged the taper so the whole piece was about 29", before bending and making the leaf.
Steve Sells
From that perspective I thought it was much larger. glad ya got it working again Jeremy.

Jakesshop
I also have to say that's a very cool forging. I may have to see what I can do with 25 lbs LG.
beth
jk i love that! it has something like a spooky fairy tale plant about it :) the leaf reminds me of a flame too somehow. i agree - it looks way bigger has a weighty look about it :)
jeremy k
That is interesting Beth - I never say that in this. Now that you mention it I can see your point, maybe from some of the cartoonish movies I've seen. Although the idea was to transform something of a standard stock (a round of steel) to look like it is, or has grown into something. Spooky - hum....interesting. beth
jk - its probably cos i like those kind of stories :) when i say spooky i mean kind of otherworldly - like a man eating plant or a stone pillar that turns into a rose or something that has a bit more Life in it than your average plant :) i really like it ! jeremy k
I found it is running a bit on the slow side so I will order a larger motor pulley to step the speed up a bit - 3hp motor and a 3-1/2" pulley only gave me approximately 160 BPM. Jocko 58
JK beats doing it by hand specially a 100lb hammer :)
Buffalo
I love this! Life will find a way! Done taller these would make awsome pickets for a railing. Did you make the giant tongs to hold the 2"?
jeremy k
I had a pr of tongs that would hold 2-1/2" round in the rack, so I didn't have to make any new tongs. As I mentioned above - I replaced the pulley and went a bit larger - made a world of difference and others that have pounded some hot steel with it said "it's a pounder". Now just have to cut the floor and get a proper footing for it, this fall hopefully.
ThomasPowers
When I was working 2.5" sq stock we welded a 1" bar on the end as a handle for working
jeremy k
Thomas - that "IS" and easy fix although with a tong clip and a usable pr of tongs (from and auction many years ago) it was easy for me to work the 2-1/2" stock that I haven't ever worked in my shop before. windancer
Very graceful piece. I, too, thought it was at least man height. Good job! Dave
jeremy k
Thank you everyone. I wish I had a hammer for a life sized pc like that, along with many other people too, I bet.
